Teaching Others to Say No
On Wednesday, July 24, 2013, students from across the greater Livingston Parish area taught a prevention lesson to children in Eastover Estates. This group of students from the Baton Rouge International School, Denham Springs High School, Denham Springs Junior High, Victory Academy, and Walker High School worked together to introduce elementary-aged children to eight ways to
refuse drugs and alcohol. High school students started the morning lesson with an icebreaker, and then divided the children into groups based on age level. After each child introduced him or herself to the group, the teens taught eight refusal skills.
The skills were:
(1) Say No Thanks
(2) Give a Reason, Fact, or Excuse
(3) Walk Away
(4) Change the Subject
(5) Use Humor
(6) Repeat, Repeat, and Repeat the Refusal
(8) Hang With Others
To end the lesson the teens assigned a scenario to each child. The children had to demonstrate a refusal skill that would enable them to avoid the negative situation. Mighty Moms and LP SADD partnered with the schools to implement this successful lesson.
